Capital Group

A Design Prioritising Employee Wellness

Contractor: Overbury

Architect: tp bennett

Located in the heart of London, Capital Group opened their brand new office in Paddington Square. The space embodies the client’s vision of a forward-thinking environment that prioritises connectivity and well-being for their 1,000 employees, with specialist joinery playing a key part in establishing the tone.

The Design

With a focus on earthy tones and natural materials, each floor offers distinct amenity spaces designed to encourage interaction, growth, and engagement. The extensive use of oak, lavish biophilia, and a light colour palette creates a welcoming atmosphere. Custom LED lighting was seamlessly integrated into the joinery to enhance the ambiance of each space.

Planters were strategically placed throughout the space to introduce a sense of nature, effortlessly blending the outdoors with the indoors. These planters were developed by implementing curved edges to harmonise with the rest of the interior.

The area showcases several standout joinery elements, such as a custom curved, fluted marble deli bar, a large marble reception desk, and a fully three-dimensional feature wall finished with painted and oak veneered panels. As well as more typical joinery materials such as timber, our team’s expertise extends to stone, fabrics, and resins amongst many others - materials often incorporated into our projects.

The Finer Details

A standout feature is the Deli Bar on Level 11. The marble, carefully selected from our supplier in Italy, was meticulously fitted to the bar with precision-cut slabs to achieve an inch-perfect finish.

The curved edges were crafted from faceted marble pieces, before being Waterjet cut to form a smooth, rounded shape. Gareth Davies (GD Stones) played a vital role in the process of creating this impressive feature measuring 9.7 meters in length and 3.9 meters in width.

Coordination with catering services posed a challenge due to the specific requirements for the bar's hot points. We worked closely with the catering equipment manufacturers to ensure the design not only achieved the desired custom look but also provided optimal functionality for end users. Late in the project, bespoke hanging planters were added above the bar, enhancing the calm atmosphere.

Beside the deli bar is a serene seating area, designed as a quiet retreat from the busy office. Soft, earthy tones and a variety of materials create a calming environment, with large planters adding touches of greenery.

Employee wellness was a clear priority for the client, evident in the range of wellness spaces included. The yoga studio features oak veneer throughout, with 3D wall panels and a bespoke AV unit to separate it from the surrounding area. Multiple tea points are located across the floors, with several striking spaces featuring bespoke poured terrazzo and Corian stone worktops sourced from Arenastone. The worktop also includes a large planter, adding a natural touch.

This remarkable project earned a spot as a finalist for the Project of the Year - Workplace 70k+ category at the 2024 Mixology Awards. Capital was also recently shortlisted in the FX Awards for Global Project and Workplace any size, and we are incredibly proud to have played a role in its success. It was a pleasure to collaborate with Overbury and tp bennett on this project, and we are thrilled with the final result.
